My earliest and favorite technicolor musical memory above all others is “Here’s to the Girls” from Ziegfeld Follies. I know I’ve posted about it before, but while revisiting my faves while staying home, I thought I’d post again. An all-star tribute released in 1946, the film opens to Ziegfeld in his lavish apartment in heaven reminiscing about his early showbiz days, and the first follies show he did in 1907. He imagines what it would be like to produce just one more... Fred Astaire stays true to the #Ziegfeld tradition, opening with a song about the beautiful #showgirls who were always the centerpiece of the follies. Although the film is credited as directed by Vincente Minnelli, who also directed other favorite films of mine, like The Band Wagon and An American in Paris, Here s to the Girls, was actually directed by George Sidney, who directed other sumptuous musicals including The Harvey Girls, Pal Joey, Showboat and Jupiter’s Darling. According to Minnelli’s autobiography, half of #ZiegfeldFollies was directed by him when Sidney was unhappy after the first month of filming and asked to be let off the film.....maybe, for Sidney, like me, nothing could ever top this scene?! Pink rhinestone mic drop?? In the photos following the film clip, you can see how @catherinedlish and I created a #burlesque act in 2001 inspired by this beloved scene that, to me, is the stuff of dreams. 💗 PS #LucilleBall is the quintessential #Glamonatrix here!
